Prince was one of the greatest musicians and performers of all time, with his sexually charged lyrics, musical virtuosity and his trademark purple androgynous image.
Prince came to fame in the late 70s wowing audiences and critics alike with his unique sound and songs like ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’, ‘Purple Rain’, ‘1999’ and ‘Kiss’ just to name a few. He has sold over 100million records and won numerous awards.
His biggest achievement was his album ‘Purple Rain’ which went platinum a whopping 13 times! The lead single ‘When Does Cry’ spent 5 weeks at the top of the US billboards. Prince also released a film of ‘Purple Rain’ which shot the musician into superstardom.
He was one of the most talented musicians of the last 50 years, not only could Prince sing extremely well, he was also a very talented guitarist, often compared to the likes of Jimi Hendrix. Additionally he could play pretty much any instrument, and on his first few albums he actually recorded every single instrument himself. He was also a prolific songwriter and even wrote Sinead O’Conners massive hit “Nothing Compares 2 U”.
His live shows were second to none. Members of his band have been quoted as saying he was a complete perfectionist. And everyone who saw his live music fell in love with his artistic genius and his incomprehensible talent.
Prince was found dead in his recording studio on the 21st of April 2016, the cause of death is still unknown, he was 57 years old.
Prince had a profound impact on music and musicians in his 40 year career in music. To honour him we have a few tributes from some our Matchbox Music bands to give tribute to the man and his legacy.
"Prince's musical genius has impacted us all as musicians from a young age. He gave us the spark and passion to keep doing what we love and inspired us to always strive for greatness in our playing and performance." Rosa- City Soul
“Prince was quite simply a musical genius. We were lucky enough to see him perform live. He sang, danced, played drums, keyboards, guitar, bass and percussion throughout the night - an incredible experience we’ll never forget. Prince was simply in a different league, and inspires us to work harder in our careers as musicians.”
Tom- Indigo & Sons & The Ruby Stones
“I Wanna Be Your lover, Purple Rain, Kiss and Batdance (only to name a few) are the trademarks of a master architect of funk, rock, R&B and pop.
Prince's work is often compared to musical geniuses such as Miles Davis, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye and even Charlie Chaplin, and it is a sad loss to the industry and to the fans - He will be deeply missed.”
Rick Walsh - The Celebrations
"The first time I ever saw him play live I was awestruck. He was electric and held the audience in the palm of his hand for the whole show. Not only was his music of the upmost genius on a technical and musical level, he was a first class entertainer. There was something about him that caused your spine to tingle, and I knew I wanted to have that same affect on an audience. There will only ever be one Prince, his legacy will continue for years to come.”
Phil Short - Paradise City (coming soon)
Our own Dan Richards was also luckily enough to witness Prince performing live in London. saying " I was lucky enough to get hold of a ticket to a secret Prince gig last minute and it will forever stay with me as one of the best concerts I've ever seen. I must have seen him play every instrument that was on that stage with an ability that most players dream of, that coupled with his skills in crafting amazing songs left me in no doubt of how much of a musical genuis he was."
